"This session offers an introduction to the foundational elements of Dhrupad music, focusing on the interplay between rhythm (tala), melody (raga), and vocal resonance. Through live demonstrations and interactive discussions, I will break down the techniques that create the hypnotic and powerful experience of Dhrupad, allowing participants to appreciate and connect with this ancient musical form on a deeper level."
Born in 1977 and raised in Rewa, I completed my studies in Rewa and Bhopal. I grew up in a musical family. My grandfather, Khania Lal Bandhavi, was a Dhrupad singer of the Shadhu Baba Gharana and performed at the court in Rewa, M.P., for twenty years. He was honored with the title "Bandhavi" by the emperor. Since the age of ten, my grandfather taught me Dhrupad.
In addition to my vocal training, I also learned tabla playing with the Bhatta Gharana for two years. After my grandfather's death in 1994, my father sent me to study with the Dhrupad legend Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar in Bhopal. Later, I continued my studies with the Gundecha Brothers in Bhopal.
I began my performing career in 1992, and in 2010, I started my international performing career. My musical skills lie in my ability to stay in sur (pitch) and my extraordinary talent for laya (tempo) and tal (rhythm). Jhala (fast rhythm) and Uppaj (improvisation of the Bandish) are my specialties. Additionally, my voice allows me to sing in both upper and lower ranges.
Alongside my Dhrupad career, I also pursued an academic education in commerce and computer science.
